FBI Seeks Truckers Caught Up in 54-Count Tax Fraud Investigation

The FBI is seeking self-employed truckers who used Genuine Financial Services after a 54-count indictment tied to alleged tax and bank fraud.

What happened: The FBI is asking self-employed truck drivers nationwide who used Genuine Financial Services (GFS) to come forward. A federal grand jury returned a 54-count indictment against Diane Marie Poe, 62, who owns the Walton County, Georgia, firm. Prosecutors allege customers handed GFS money meant for estimated taxes or payroll obligations and that those funds were not delivered as promised. Allegations are unproven unless proven in court.

Why drivers should care: Independent operators often trust outside preparers with filings and money owed to the IRS. If deposits or services were never completed, you can learn about problems only after government notices arrive — and you may still owe what was supposed to be paid.

Behind the headlines

According to FreightWaves, GFS offered bookkeeping, payroll, tax preparation, and filing help and gained trucking clients largely through word-of-mouth. The Aug. 12 indictment includes dozens of bank-fraud counts plus payroll-related tax offenses and other charges covering corporate returns, false submissions, and government-program theft. Prosecutors also accuse Poe of mishandling her own and the firm’s filing and payroll-tax obligations. The FBI is investigating with the IRS and local Georgia partners and wants additional customers who suspect missing deposits or unfinished services.

What it means for owner-operators

  • You still own the tax result: Even when a preparer handles the work, unpaid estimates or incomplete filings can leave the taxpayer facing unexpected balances, notices, or follow-up with the IRS.
  • Word-of-mouth is not due diligence: A trusted referral inside the trucking community does not replace checking that payments and filings actually posted.
  • Records matter if something is missing: Bank statements, fuel and repair receipts, and copies of what you thought was filed help a licensed tax professional sort what happened.

What it means for company drivers

  • Standard W-2 filings: Company drivers who only used ordinary W-2 withholding and did not hire GFS are outside this specific case.
  • 1099 side income: If you ran lease-purchase, side 1099 work, or other self-employment through GFS, treat yourself like an owner-operator for review purposes.

What you can do

  • If you used Poe or GFS, contact FBI Atlanta at 770-216-3000 while parked or off duty, especially if you suspect missing deposits or unfinished services.
  • While parked, log into your IRS online account and request transcripts for the years in question so you can compare them to your own records.
  • Gather bank statements and business receipts for those years, then consider consulting a licensed CPA or enrolled agent who is independent of the preparer named in the case. This is not tax or legal advice.

What to watch next

Court dates and any restitution path will develop as the prosecution proceeds. Authorities presume Poe innocent unless a court finds otherwise. Drivers who used GFS should verify their own filing and payment status rather than waiting for a headline update.
